Humane & Effective Raccoon Control Services

Raccoons are medium to large sized mammals that are native to North America. They are known for their distinctive appearance (they are called “masked bandits” for a reason!), clever behaviour, and undeniable adaptability. When you come across a raccoon, it is usually easy to tell exactly what they are – they often have a stocky build with a ringed tail, and a mask-like pattern of darker fur around their eyes. They will weigh between 10 to 30 pounds and measure about 2 to 3 feet in length, excluding the tail. Their fur is dense and varies in colour from shades of lighter grey to darker brown.

Raccoons are known for their ability to thrive in almost any situation that they are put in, and will adapt to their environment accordingly – this includes residential areas. They are proficient climbers and are often found nesting in attics, chimneys, crawl spaces, or other cozy spots in and around homes. Although they tend to choose areas that are off the ground, they are also known to burrow underneath outdoor structures such as sheds, detached garages, and decks. They prefer areas with easy access to water sources (ponds, swimming pools, etc.) or food they don’t need to work hard for. Raccoons will eat anything from fruits, nuts, and vegetables to insects, small mammals, bird eggs, and even garbage. Their dexterous front paws allow them to manipulate objects and open containers with ease, making them the perfect scavenger. These mammals are mostly nocturnal, although they may become active during daylight hours in urban environments where they have gotten used to human activity.

While raccoons may appear cute and harmless, they can pose certain risks. Raccoons are known carriers of diseases such as rabies, distemper, and roundworm – their feces may contain harmful parasites that can cause contamination and transmit diseases to both humans and pets. They will typically avoid confrontations with people, but can become aggressive if threatened or when protecting their young. If approached or startled, they may hiss, growl, or attack in self-defence.

Why Has a Raccoon Chosen My Property?

As cities expand and proper green spaces become more scarce, raccoons are getting increasingly comfortable living within residential neighbourhoods. They may choose a specific property for several reasons, including food/water availability, shelter opportunities, and an abundance of vegetation/desirable landscaping. If a residential property offers any of these favourable conditions, raccoons may decide to stick around for the long-run. These creatures are experts at taking advantage of human structures and resources while minimizing their exposure to potential predators – this is especially true when they are mothering young.

How Can Burlington Wildlife Help?

Raccoons are one of the most common wildlife species that we encounter in Burlington, and this won’t change anytime soon. Although they can be invasive, they play an important role in balancing our ecosystem. They help maintain a balanced food chain, control insect population, and contribute to seed dispersal. However, if their presence becomes problematic and/or dangerous, it is always advisable to consult with a local wildlife removal professional to find humane and appropriate solutions to manage the situation. When deterrent methods have not been successful, or a raccoon has already created an established den, Burlington Wildlife can provide assistance.

Here is an overview of our services and a few of the ways that we may be able to help:

→ Assessment and Inspection: We will conduct a thorough assessment of your property to identify the extent of the raccoon infestation and determine any potential entry points. We inspect to determine how raccoons are gaining access, and look into any damage caused. This initial evaluation helps to develop a customized and effective removal plan.

→ Repairs and Exclusion: We want to make sure that once the raccoons are gone from the property, we repair entry points and secure the home against future wildlife intrusions. Potential access areas are sealed off using durable materials, such as heavy-gauge wire mesh, to stop raccoons from re-entering. This is a crucial step in long-term successful prevention.

→ Cleanup and Sanitization: Raccoons can leave behind droppings, urine, and nesting materials, which can pose health risks. Our team will evaluate this risk and can offer services to clean and sanitize the affected areas, eliminating any potential contamination.

→ Compliance with Regulations: We are a licensed wildlife removal company with years of experience, and have the necessary knowledge to handle wildlife-related issues in compliance with local laws. We understand the restrictions surrounding the humane removal of raccoons, ensuring that the process is always legal and ethical.
